Phi Sigma Pi:
All You Need to Know and More!
Will joining Phi Sigma Pi consume my life?
As is true with any organization, Phi Sigma Pi is what you make of it, and the more you put in, the more you get back. With that being said, our brothers’ levels of involvement vary greatly and that’s ok. We have brothers are only involved in Phi Sigma Pi and thus are very active, and we have brothers who are leaders in many organizations on campus and just don’t have time for Phi Sigma Pi to be at the top of the list, and that’s ok too! There are minimum participation requirements to remain a member, but Phi Sigma Pi will teach you leadership skills that will enable you to be highly involved and remain active elsewhere.
What makes Phi Sigma Pi different from other fraternities on campus?
First of all, Phi Sigma Pi is co-ed. We began fully male, but in 1977 the guys got smart and let women in! (And yes, they are called “Brothers.” too!) Second, Phi Sigma Pi is not just an honor society, nor is it just a social fraternity all mixed together. Third, instead of organizing events with on-campus greek organizations, we travel to visit other chapters of our fraternity nationwide which creates a truly national brotherhood.
Do you haze? What about alcohol and drinking?
Absolutely not. We strictly follow our university and national fraternity policies on hazing, drinking and other risk management issues. Every brother and every initiate signs an agreement each semester to do so. At an event where alcohol may be present, those who are of the legal age can drink, but we have many brothers who choose not to, so the choice is really up to you.
Do I have to attend all night of Rush? What if I have class or work?
Your attendance at our Rush events is really up to you, although if you’re going to miss something we highly suggest you email our Initiation Advisor to let us know that you’re still interested. Rush is a time for you to meet the Brothers and for the Brothers to get to know you, and the more Brothers you meet, the easier our decision is on who to let in. However, other obligations will not be held against you.
Do you have anything to do with the greek system on campus?
Absolutely nothing. In fact, according to our national constitution, we’re not even allowed to be incorporated into the same system. We are open to participating in events or pairing up to organize speakers or service projects, but Phi Sigma Pi is completely independent from Greek Life.
What if I already belong to a fraternity or sorority?
This must be your lucky day! Since Phi Sigma Pi is not at all incorporated into the Greek system, our brothers have the opportunity to join our fraternity as well as other social fraternities and sororities on campus. We do not recommend rushing both at the same time, because our initiation program is just as intense as those of social organizations.
Is this one of those things where you just pay money and put it on your resume?
Phi Sigma Pi is more than just an honors society. It’s not one of those organizations where you pay money and 4 years later graduate college with a line on your resume. There are minimum membership and initiation requirements to be fulfilled to remain a member of our organization. However, we have no doubt that once you become a Brother, you will understand what it means to be a “Brother for life” and will want to stay involved.
What are the requirements to join?
Someone hasn’t really checked out the website if you’re still asking this question...all of our requirements for rush, initiation and membership are listed on the requirements page as part of the Rush section. Check it out so you know what you’re getting yourself into. Trust us, the requirements are minimal an they’re definitely worth it in the end!
Hey...isn’t this that dork frat?
Watch it, take it easy! Just because we’re smart doesn’t mean we don’t know how to have a good time. In fact, the only thing ‘honors’ here are our academic requirements - a 3.5 to Rush with between 12 and 33 credits and a 3.3 to Rush with between 34 and 90 credits. We make our brothers leave the calculators and pocket protectors at home for our parties, and if you don’t believe us, come check us out during Rush!
Where can I get more information about Phi Sigma Pi and the Alpha Beta Chapter?
Before Rush really begins, we hold two non-mandatory informational sessions about our organization. There you will meet Brothers who can answer any and all questions you might have. Check out our website for locations and times. In addition, feel free to email our Initiation Advisor if you want to Rush or stop any one of us wearing a Phi Sigma Pi shirt around campus - we look forward to meeting you!
